Nurturing joyful Jewish identity

Cheder at Kehillah is joyful, thoughtful and alive. We help young people build a confident Jewish identity through learning that feels relevant to their lives. Classes are dynamic and inclusive, rooted in curiosity and kindness. Every child’s voice matters. Teaching blends Hebrew language with Jewish studies, so learners can pray, sing, question and lead with ease.

Who is it for?

Member children ages 6 to 13

When is it?

Cheder runs alongside our twice monthly Shabbat morning services (usually the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month) during term time, 11am to 12:45pm. Children learn while the community prays, then we come back together for Kiddush.

What to expect

Expect warmth, welcome and real progress. Children explore stories, values and history, learn Hebrew that they can actually use, and experience the rhythms of Jewish life through song, celebration and shared responsibility. Cheder also prepares students for b’nei mitzvah in a way that feels supportive, not stressful.

Families tell us they value a progressive approach that honours all identities and family structures, small groups with patient and encouraging teachers, a setting where children see Judaism lived and loved, and clear pathways into participation, leadership and b’nei mitzvah.

To keep learning consistent for everyone, we ask families to commit to regular attendance.

How to join

Cheder is open to Kehillah members with advance sign up.

Non members are welcome to try one session before joining Kehillah formally as a member family. Either way, if you would like your child to attend, please fill out this form and send an email to cheder@kehillah.org.uk

Hebrew Volunteers Needed

We are seeking volunteers with Hebrew knowledge who can help out teaching young people Hebrew in our Cheder. No fluency required – you just need to be comfortable reading from a Siddur / prayer-book. You can sign-up to volunteer whenever it suits you – it could be every 2 weeks or every 2 months – we have a rota.
